The Power of Positive Affirmations

Let’s talk about affirmations, those simple, often cheesy-sounding phrases like “I am enough” or “I choose peace.” You’ve probably seen them on Instagram posts, sticky notes, or maybe even printed on a coffee mug. But from a mindfulness perspective, they’re more than just feel-good quotes, they’re intentional tools for shifting the way we experience life.

What Are Affirmations, Really?

At their core, affirmations are just thoughts we consciously choose to repeat. And from a mindfulness lens, that’s where the power lies. Mindfulness isn’t about escaping reality or pretending everything’s perfect. It’s about showing up, fully present, to the moment as it is and learning how to respond with awareness instead of reacting from old habits.

Our thoughts create ripples. Over time, those ripples shape how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we move through the world. When we use affirmations mindfully, we’re not just layering positivity over pain, we’re inviting ourselves to notice what’s here, and gently steer the mind toward healing and compassion.

Why They Work (When Done Mindfully)

Let’s be real: repeating “I love myself” on loop doesn’t magically erase insecurity. But when you combine that affirmation with mindfulness (when you notice the resistance it brings up, the discomfort it stirs, and you stay with that moment without judgment) something powerful starts to happen.

You create space. You soften. You begin to believe that maybe, just maybe, a different narrative is possible.

Affirmations become more than just words—they become anchors. They remind you of your intention, your worth, your growth. And because mindfulness teaches us to observe without clinging or pushing away, we don’t have to force belief. We just return to the affirmation with curiosity and care.

Using Affirmations in a Mindful Way

If you want to make affirmations part of your mindfulness practice, here’s a super casual, no-pressure way to start:

  1. Pick one that resonates. Not something that feels fake or forced. Something that feels like a soft nudge, not a command. Maybe:“I am learning to trust myself.”“It’s okay to rest.”“I meet myself with compassion.”

  2. Breathe with it. Sit down, take a breath, and gently repeat the affirmation—out loud or silently. Not as a mantra to push out thoughts, but as an invitation. Let the words settle into your awareness.

  3. Notice what comes up. Resistance? Sadness? Peace? All of it is welcome. You’re not trying to fix anything, just observe and be present.

  4. Bring it into your day. Write it on a sticky note. Say it while washing your hands. Whisper it before sleep. Let it become a thread that gently weaves through your day.

When affirmations are practiced mindfully, they’re not about pretending everything’s okay, they’re about choosing to meet life with presence, kindness, and the quiet courage to believe that growth is always possible.

So yeah, go ahead and say the thing. Even if it feels awkward. Especially if it feels awkward. Because in that moment, you’re doing the radical work of choosing compassion. & that’s something worth affirming.
