Full Moon in Cancer, Spirit Moon & Thunderbird Medicine

Full Moon in Cancer ~ Saturday January 3rd

The energy of Cancer is centered around nurturing. Cancer is ruled by the 4th house, this is the  domain of family, children, and home. Cancer is also ruled by the Moon, giving this sign its wavy emotional reputation. When we have a Full Moon in this sign, we are being invited to let go of those emotional blocks related to the home and family. The energy of cancer is very connected to home and all things that are involved in the home. Taking inventory of your physical home during this time and purging those things that have been intervening with your sense of flow. This is the time to examine and let go of all the blocks of your flow in your home.

This Moon is connected to themes of family and is a calling to go in deeper with your own family systems and the barriers to healing there. This is a hard Full Moon for those of us with any family dramas, because they will come to the surface during a Cancer Full Moon. However, this is an opportunity to deepen the relationship and connection with your healing inner being. When you begin to feel uprooted, anchor yourself back down by following your breath in and out, allowing you to come back to yourself. Stay with the emotional experience and express that nurturing energy of Cancer with yourself.

Family of origin can also be the blocker of our authenticity as well. If you were ridiculed as a child for being yourself or if you had any bullying in the past, these can be blockers to that flow of authentic energy from within.

The indigenous teaching for this moon calls this moon the Spirit Moon. This is a time of reflection and silence. That silence is what helps to bring reflection and the reflections we have boring us clarity. This is how we can make room for our most authentic self to shine through. The Spirit Moon asks us to awaken this energy of inner truth and allow it to shine fully.

The story of how the northern lights came to be is connected with the first moon of our calendar and brings the medicine of the thunderbird.

How The Northern Lights Came To Be:

The Sun was a central part of all creation. All the creatures would watch in awe as the Sun each night would light up the sky with the most beautiful colors and do the same at night during the sunset. The Moon, Stars, and other celestial beings grew jealous of the sun.

One night the celestial beings devised a plan to steal the brilliance of the sun, to take her ability to create those beautiful skies. As they planned out their great heist of the sun, the great thunderbird flew by, listening. It was the responsibility of the thunderbird to to help all the creatures to maintain integrity and as the celestial beings went to steal the suns colors, the great thunderbird began to flap his wings, and roared to the night beings, “why don’t you embody your OWN light, your own magic colors within? Do you not see how bright and brilliant you all are on your own in the night sky?”

The celestial beings all looked at each other in awe and began to witness their own light, their own beautiful and magical energies across the night sky. In their jealousy of the sun, they had forgotten their own unique radiance.

The sun forgave the celestial beings as they asked for forgiveness. The message of the thunderbird is to honor your own inner light, to awaken this beauty and brilliance within. Beauty comes in all forms, and we must honor the differences in our gifts and abilities, there is room for us all to shine. As a gift for reconnecting with this spirit, the thunderbird offered an explosion of color in the night sky, the northern lights. This is our reminder that when we see these lights dancing in the sky, may they always remind us that we don't have to step on anyone else to rise up. Our beauty is unique and may we always honor this beautiful light within.

The medicine of the thunderbird is integrity. Offering us lessons on how to honor this light within in a good way. When we get off track with this, the thunderbird can help to remind us that we are beautiful and special AS WE ARE, allowing this deep authentic light to shine more fully. We don't need to be anyone else, or strive to achieve anyone else’s magic. Let the thunderbird show you that you are the best guide and teacher for yourself. Tap into that deep flowing river of self, you will find what you’re looking for there.

Your Full Moon affirmation is from Asha Frost out of a book called, “You Are The Medicine”

“I awaken to the truth of all that I am. My authentic presence is sacred; I see it, feel it, and know it. Each day I invoke it to come forward so that I may walk in true integrity with my nature. I am the Medicine.”

Shadow Work:

  • How can I nurture myself more compassionately?

  • How does it feel to be seen fully?

  • Was I supported in childhood to be myself?

  • What is blocking the pathway to my authentic self?

  • How can I be more authentically myself?

  • Is there anything I need to let go of?
