A Greatful Heart

This week’s lesson for my treatment groups was on the topic of gratitude. What exactly does it mean to cultivate a grateful heart? What is gratitude?

Gratitude by definition is the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

Gratitude is also one of the fastest ways to generate happiness from within. When we can step outside of our current plane of thinking and insert gratitude, we can invite happiness back in, even in moments of utter unhappiness.

By taking a few moments in the morning to list things you have gratitude for can help start the day in a new perspective, one that is rooted in joy. Gratitude can be used to help defuse an emotional upset, help you move through deep suffering, gratitude can help bring you back to reality when you are stuck in the muck of life.

Having a grateful heart is about leaning into the ability to take a step back and remember the good stuff in this life. We all suffer, we all have things that are heavy that we hold on to and have with us. But we also all have such deep wells of joy and happiness that also live within us. Gratitude is a beautiful way to find your way back to this joy.

No matter how dark the clouds become, if you go up enough, or if you wait long enough, the clouds will pass, the blue sky will be visible again. The blue sky is always there. The happiness we have within us is always there, sometimes we just have to ride a wave of gratitude back to it.

What are you greatful for?
